Walmart Opens New High-Tech Fulfillment Center

A new 2.2 million square foot Walmart fulfillment center was opened 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis, according to a company statement. The facility will be located in McCordsville, IN, and will be Walmart’s largest fulfillment center.

“With more customers shopping online, we’re leveraging state-of-the-art technology to increase speed of delivery all while creating tech-empowered career opportunities for our associates,” said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president, Fulfillment Network Operations for Walmart U.S.

The new fulfillment center is one of Walmart's next-generation facilities, helping increase the company's order fulfillment capacity while providing customers with faster shipping and delivery times. The McCordsville center is the second of four planned next-generation facilities.

Combined with their existing fulfillment network, the new facilities will expand Walmart’s ability to provide next or two-day shipping to 95% of the U.S. population. The company’s end-to-end third-party fulfillment service will also use the facility to fulfill Marketplace items.

This game-changing technology will allow Walmart to expand career opportunities for their associates, with the new center being home to over 1,000 associates, with additional hiring for tech-focused positions.

“I’m pleased that nearly half of the associates in our McCordsville fulfillment center are continuing their career with us here after having worked in our Plainfield facility,” said Geoffrey Appleby, the general manager of the McCordsville fulfillment center.

Walmart strongly focuses on the Indiana region, with 127 retail locations and over $48.8 million donated to local nonprofit organizations. To celebrate the opening, Walmart contributed $5,000 to two local organizations: Riley Children’s Foundation and Mt. Vernon Education Foundation.

Across the state, Walmart spent $1.1 billion with Indiana-based suppliers in 2023 and supported 33,373 supplier jobs in the region. The retailer also employs over 43,000 associates across the state.

 “Walmart has long been a good corporate partner in Indiana, and we’re excited to see their commitment grow in Hancock County,” said Ann Lathrop, chief strategy officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.
