Target Updates Leadership Team, Names Brett Craig New EVP and CIO

Target has made several changes to its leadership team, promoting existing staff to new roles and creating a new position focused on the brand’s end-to-end guest experience. 

Brett Craig has been promoted to executive vice president and chief information officer and Arthur Valdez has joined the Target leadership team as executive vice president and chief supply chain and logistics officer. Cara Sylvester has been named the company’s executive vice president and chief guest experience officer. Additionally, Matt Zabel is now executive vice president and general counsel and Christina Hennington will now have oversight of Target in India.

Promoted to the new role, Craig will be reporting to Sylvester, the company’s new EVP and chief guest experience officer. Craig has been with Target since 2008, most recently in the role of senior vice president of digital. During his time with the company, he has held various leadership roles across technology and merchandising. 

Craig is assuming the role of Mike McNamara, who announced his retirement in 2021 and held the position since 2015. 

“I’ve loved every minute of my time here, but professionally and personally, the timing is great to begin the process of retiring and transitioning to a new CIO,” said McNamara in a previous statement. “The technology team and platform are in brilliant shape and our business is already taking on its next growth chapter.

McNamara will transition to a strategic advisory role through the end of January 2023. 

Arthur Valdez

Valdez has been with Target since 2016 and is joining the leadership team as executive vice president and chief supply chain and logistics officer.

He will continue playing a key role in transforming the company’s supply chain network to meet evolving omni-channel needs. Valdez will continue to report to John Mulligan, executive vice president and chief operating officer. 

Cara Sylvester

Sylvester is taking on a newly created role at Target, executive vice president and chief guest experience officer. In the position, Sylvester will lead guest experience strategy, looking to increase personalization and boost traffic to Target’s stores, website, and mobile app. This new position will work across several departments, including marketing, digital, and technology. 

Sylvester has been with Target since 2007, previously serving as executive vice president and chief marketing and digital officer. She will continue to report to Brian Corness, the company’s chairman and CEO. 

Matt Zabel

Zabel has been promoted to executive vice president and general counsel.

He joined the company in 2010 and was previously Target’s senior vice president of risk and employee labor relations.

Zabel will continue reporting to Don Lui, the company’s EVP and chief legal and risk officer. 

Christina Hennington

Hennington is expanding her role, taking oversight of Target in India. As the company’s executive vice president and chief growth officer, Hennington manages merchandising, product design, and sourcing, as well as strategy, insights and growth.

With her new focus, Hennington  will drive more connectivity between Target’s multidisciplinary team in India and the company’s growth strategies. Hennington will continue reporting to Cornell.

Cornell, chairman and CEO at Target, said the updates to its leadership team will position the company for continued growth while also supporting the size and scale of its existing $100 billion business. 

“I have tremendous confidence in these leaders and the value they bring to our organization as we work together to meet the needs of current and new Target guests,” he added.
