Target has official opened the doors to its 30,000-square-foot Times Square store, showcasing once again its ability to open and operate stores in spaces of any size.

The retailer’s 92nd location in the greater New York City area is found on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. While the 30,000-square-foot is still big, it’s small-format for Target.

Target’s small-format stores start at as small as 15,000 square feet or less, but the average store is around 40,000 square feet, roughly one-third the size of a full-size 130,000 square-foot Target store. Target noted it is planning to open stores up to 140,000 square feet this year.

Target’s Times Square store is aimed at both locals and tourists, between two of NYC’s largest subway stations. The store kicks off its tech-prowess with an 84-foot-high curved digital display (as high as a tennis court is long) displaying images like a transforming Bullseye logo Target’s Bullseye the dog with an animated tail.

Design elements inside give a nod to its city surroundings. Colorful mosaic tiles spell out “Times Square” on the lobby walls, while exposed ceilings and suspended steel panels channel the industrial vibe of a subway platform.

As shoppers exit the lobby, polished concrete floors, backlit wall art and bold graphics behind the checkout aim to capture the feeling of the buildings and artwork seen down a Manhattan street. The store offers grab-and-go food options and fulfillment options like Order Pickup.
