First we got Choose My Model, and now Walmart is expanding its virtual try-on capabilities by zoning in on personalization with Be Your Own Model.

Walmart released the technology in March of 2022, partnering with the Zeekit platform to allow consumers to select from 50 models between 5’2” – 6’0” in height and sizes XS – XXXL to best represent their height, body shape, and skin tone, and display how an item will look on them. Now shoppers can get an even more accurate representation by using their own photo to better visualize how an item looks on them.

The company is leveraging algorithms and intricate machine learning models to develop accurate topographic maps that create a more precise image compared to other virtual try-ons that rely on layered, computer-generated renders.

The capability is available for more than 270,000 items across Walmart’s online portfolio, featuring brands such as Free Assembly, Scoop, Sofia Jeans and Sofia Active by Sofia Vergara, Love & Sports, ELOQUII Elements, Time & Tru, Athletic Works, Terra & Sky, No Boundaries, Avia and The Pioneer Woman. Some national brands like Champion, Levi’s, and Hanes also feature eligible products on Walmart’s site.

Walmart's try-on capability

“We are continuing to make bold moves to establish Walmart as a destination for fashion. It started with work over the last few years to expand our assortment of quality, on-trend and accessible apparel and accessories," said Denise Incandela, EVP, apparel and private brands, Walmart U.S. "More recently, it includes prioritizing the creation and introduction of innovative shopping experiences that help customers discover the assortment and enable new and existing customers to shop with confidence.”

How It Works

Items will be clearly tagged with a “Try It On” label, and consumers will have the option to choose the Be Your Own Model option, where they upload their photo, or the Choose My Model feature where they can rely on existing model images.

For those who choose to use their own photo, they will be prompted to take a picture of themselves within the Walmart iOS app. When the image is saved, they can view themselves as the model each time they select the virtual try-on service.

“With Be Your Own Model, a customer sees an ultra-realistic simulation with shadows, fabric draping, and where clothing falls on their figure in seconds," said Incandela. "For example, a single shirt can come in six different colors, seven different sizes and two sleeve lengths. Our technology captures all the variations and shows how they look uniquely on each individual.”

For now the feature is only available to iOS users with the Walmart app. Soon they will be able to access the capability on desktop or web, and Android users should gain access within the next several weeks.

“Launching this next iteration of virtual try-on technology delivers on our continuous goal of making online shopping an inclusive, engaging and personalized experience that better replicates in-store shopping,” added Incandela.
