Grocery store Schnucks has introduced a flexible work option for associates at select St. Louis area locations. Associates at these stores can use the scheduling app to view and select open shifts in their preferred locations, and opt-in to receive notifications when shifts become available, the company said.

While Schnucks’ Flexforce associates are a new classification of hourly workers, they will be afforded the same benefits and perks as existing Schnucks employees. Likewise, current Schnucks staff can log in and select shifts through the Flexforce app. Currently, Flexforce workers’ will be paid $12.85 per hour and only those aged 18 and over can apply.

“At Schnucks, a primary goal is to position our teammates for success, and we are excited to offer this new opportunity to both our current and prospective teammates,” said Schnucks chief people officer Laura Freeman. “Much like rideshare and food delivery service employees, Flexforce teammates will be able to seek and claim shifts at the time and location of their choosing.”

Retailers Using Flex Options to Attract Seasonal Staff

Schnucks is just one of a number of retailers offering flex-time in an effort to attract and retain workers.

According to McKinsey & Company, lack of flexibility (defined as unpredictable schedules, inflexible start/stop times, and lack of control over how work gets done) is the number one reason U.S. frontline retail workers are considering leaving their jobs. As the "quiet quitting" trend continues and turnover remains steady, companies have begun to recognize the need to give employees greater control over how, when, and where they work.

As we enter the busy holiday season, retailers are increasingly turning to flexible options as a way to get ahead of the seasonal hiring curve. Macy’s is hoping to attract 41,000 full- and part-time seasonal positions. The retailer will provide instant access to earned wages as well as flexible scheduling options similar to those now offered by Schnucks. Similarly Target is aiming to bring in 100,000 seasonal team members and will offer flexible scheduling to any and all employees, including those hired for the holiday season.

As in previous years, Target will work with current staff first to provide their desired schedules throughout the holiday season. Dick’s Sporting Goods have made similar moves and are looking to hire 9,000 seasonal associates while extending access to optional DailyPay.
