Once again, Glassdoor has pulled back the curtain on the best places to work, but this year’s list is light on retailers.

Amid economic uncertainty and with many workers on the job hunt, the fact that last year RIS News identified 13 retail companies on Glassdoor’s 100 Best Places to Work 2022, yet this year we only uncovered three retailers, should sound the alarm for the industry.

Attracting and retaining talented retail employees is an ongoing issue for the retail industry. To discover who is getting it right, Glassdoor published its 15th annual Employees’ Choice Awards, revealing the 100 Best Places to Work 2023. The Glassdoor list is based on feedback shared over the past year by the employees. Reviews for these companies mention good benefits and compensation, something other retailers often lack.

“The past year brought extreme highs and lows for job seekers and employees, but despite an increasingly uncertain job market, Glassdoor data shows there are still companies hyper-focused on creating outstanding employee experiences,” said Christian Sutherland-Wong, Glassdoor CEO. “It's encouraging to see companies doubling down on employee mental health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, competitive benefits and flexible work environments as we head into 2023.”

While the lack of retailer names on the list is notable, one newcomer, the LEGO Group, hit the top 100 list at 21. One review noted the company offers the opportunity for quick career advancement if you want to take advantage of it and work from home and office. Another reviewer noted “Literally one of the best places I've ever worked for is the 51 street Lego store in NYC.

Athletic apparel company Lululemon once again made the list, but its rank slipped from No. 9 to No. 24 this year. Grocer H-E-B also slipped from No. 33 to No. 44.

While the list is light on retailers this year, technology companies are well represented. Tech was the top industry represented, with 41 companies on the list, according to Glassdoor. Tech giants on the list include: NVIDIA (#5), Google (#8), Microsoft (#13), Netflix (#40), and Salesforce (#75).
