Amazon’s Prime Day has officially become a retail mainstay, complete with a major misstep out of the gate.

The online goliath’s annual flash sale has become the retail event of the summer. It has been predicted that Amazon could rack up sales north of $3 billion over the day and a half event, but as scores of shoppers flocked to the site as it raised the curtain on the event at 3 pm Eastern, the unthinkable happened ― Amazon crashed.

The massive influx of traffic directed at the site when Prime Day began over flooded Amazon’s extremely robust infrastructure. Shoppers were meet with a static Prime Day image and when they clicked Shop All Deals to enter, the website was unresponsive.

RIS News will continue to report on this potential disaster as it develops.
