Workplace trends continue to shift as employees prioritize more control over their lives and an improved work-life balance. To identify the employers that are keeping up with these massive shifts, Fortune partnered with Great Place to Work to highlight the top 10 best places to work in retail, segmented by large American retailers (more than 1,000 employees) and small- and mid-sized American retailers (10 to 999 people).

Compared to last year, Wegmans and Target continue to claim the top two spots. Target ranked 10th in our Top 100 Retailers 2022 list, claiming a 2.35% share of the market.

Fortune’s Methodology

Great Place to Work uses Fortune’s proprietary For All methodology to evaluate and certify thousands of organizations in America’s largest ongoing annual workforce study, based on over 1 million employee survey responses and data from companies representing more than 6.1 million employees in 2022 alone.

Great Place to Work analyzed the survey responses of over 72,000 employees from Great Place to Work-Certified companies in the retail industry. Garnered statements describe employee experience and companies provide organizational data like size, location, industry, demographics, roles, and levels.

Survey data analysis and company-provided data points are factored into a combined score to compare and rank the companies that create the most consistently positive experience for all employees in this industry.

Companies with 10 to 999 people are considered for the small and medium category; companies with 1,000 employees or more are considered for the large category.

The company recently made waves for breaking its retirement age restrictions for the corporation’s CEO, who intends to stay with the company for another three years. Target has also made strides in evolving its workforce strategy through a series of investments to modernize and expand store footprints, increase upstream capacity in its supply chain, and automate distribution center processes to reduce store workload.

“These investments include the move to a starting hourly wage range of $15 to $24 across the country, enhanced health care, and wellness benefits for a larger percentage of our team; the rollout of an integrating debt-free college educational plan; and our work to enhance the growth and development opportunities available to all of our team members and the team members of color in particular,” said John Mulligan, Target’s chief operating officer, in a statement last month.

Sheetz overtook Nugget Market Inc., for third place. The company has been growing significantly over the past several years, with plans to open 20 stores in Dayton, Ohio over the next five years. The company currently operates 56 locations in Ohio, with an overall store count of 647 across its six states: Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.

While for other rankings, such as Forbes’, the RIS team included a targeted list of strictly retail companies based on editorial judgment, the Fortune rankings are broader, covering retail models across various industries, including car sales, grocery, and more.

Fortune evaluated American organizations based on over 1 million employee responses and data representing more than 6.1 million employees in 2022. Additionally, Great Place to Work analyzed differences in responses according to demographics and employee roles in order to better assess quality and consistency across the employee experience.

“As employee demands and expectations have dramatically changed over the past year, these companies have risen to the occasion — and it’s not been easy,” said Kim Peters, executive vice president of global recognition, research and strategic partnerships at Great Place to Work. “Their hard work and dedication to listen to and care for the well-being of every employee, and support them in a way that’s meaningful to all, is the standard all organizations will be held to.”
